At some point in time before the Cochlea Raid, Banjou walks into Ayato’s room to ask him stuff about the mission but Ayato’s asleep so Banjou, being that nice Banjou he is, decides he can just leave him be first since Ayato did look pretty tired.
He turns to leave the room and that’s when he hears it. It’s soft, a little muffled, but it’s there.
“… nami…”
Banjou stops and listens again, harder this time. And now it’s a lot clearer.
“Hinami…”
Banjou marches up to Ayato’s couch and stares at him. Ayato’s shifting and his face is partly hidden by his hair and arms but Banjou can see a brief smile and a faint, but definitely present, blush.
And that’s it. Like seriously. No one, especially not Kirishima Ayato, can even hope to ever lay a hand on her. Who does he think he is? Who does he think she is?
Tsukiyama would kill him. So would Kaneki. Probably the rest of Anteiku as well, right?
There’s no way Banjou will ever be fine with it, or so he think. He knows what Ayato’s like and even though Ayato wants to save her, he can’t shake off the feeling gnawing away at him. This is Ayato, he reminds himself, along with all the things he’s made to suffer under this guy’s hands.
But Banjou stands there for a moment, thinking about it and after awhile, he realizes something. He’s never seen Ayato smile before. There’s been maniacal grins and mocking smirks. But he’s never seen a relaxed, joyful and genuine smile.
The kind of smile that’s on Ayato’s face right now.
Ayato murmurs Hinami’s name again and Banjou sighs. He picks up a pillow from the side and before he even bothered to consider the possible consequences of the act, he throws it at the sleeping boy.
Years in Aogiri has trained him well and Ayato jolts awake, jumping to his feet and looking around, completely on guard. But his eyes fall on Banjou and they narrow. A look that’s really familiar surfaces.
“What the fuck was that?” Ayato asks.
“I should be asking you that question,” Banjou says. “You were acting weird.”
“Haah?!”
“You were smiling and calling out for her and your face was all red. Were you having that kind of dream?” Banjou meant it as a joke but Ayato’s face pales immediately and this doesn’t really help the situation. When his words really start sinking into Ayato’s mind, his cheeks flare up in shades of crimson.
“N-No! I-I… I was… We…”
Banjou stares in mortification as Ayato tries to form words to convey his mortified thoughts. As his attempts continue in fruitlessness, Banjou feels something churn within him.
“Just what exactly were you dreaming of?” Banjou cries out, his sudden loud voice even making the young Kirishima jump. Ayato is partly confused because he’s seen Banjou angry and annoyed at him in the past but he’s never seen Banjou fuming to such an extent before and if it was another situation at hand, he might have found it hilarious. But now, he’s somehow convinced that his life is in danger.
“I-I wasn’t… We were!”
“In the dream… were you close to her?” Banjou asks. Ayato stares at him, wordless, for a moment, still tying to orientate himself and get used to the sight before him. Banjou repeats himself again, this time louder, fiercer and much more dominant than he’s ever been before, “Were you close to her?”
“Y-Yes!” Ayato’s voice slips out shakily and he’s almost ashamed. Banjou isn’t necessarily scary at the moment but the aura radiating off him is intimidating, even for Ayato.
Banjou’s seething and he’s surprised about it himself as well. But his mind is picturing things that he doesn’t want to consider, imagining the kinds of things someone like Ayato would dream about and having Hinami be involved in it. No way, Hina-chan should never be trusted with Ayato, especially not in this sense.
“Were you touching her?”
“Erm… I… Ya…”
“Were you two naked?”
“Ye- What? What the fuck? No way!”
“Were you- No?”
Banjou’s dumbfounded stare pierces into him and all Ayato does is stare back into him. The shift was so sudden that it takes Ayato a moment to get used to the fact that Banjou isn’t pissed anymore. However, it takes a lot longer for Banjou to realize what Ayato had just said and even then, it didn’t seem to make any sense.
“Weren’t you having… lewd dreams of her?”
Ayato’s eyes go round at this. “L-l…lewd…?”
“You said you were having that kind of dream!” Banjou insists.
“I… I didn’t say I was having that kind of dream! I said I was having… that… kind of dream…” Ayato’s completely red right now and for Banjou, nothing is making any sense.
“What dream did you have?” he asks slowly.
Ayato turns away, his fists clenching on his pants. “I… She… We were… We were on a date… and then… because we were alone… we…”
Ayato’s voice trails off, his body curling into itself somehow. Banjou takes a step forward, mind racing at the thoughts. What happened? They were alone… and then? Did they hug? Kiss? Did he push her into the alleyway to forcefully make out with her?
“What… happened then?” Banjou prods. He wills his heart to still and forces his body to brace itself for the answer. Ayato remains silent, frowning as his mind debates the effects of the dilemma’s he’s caught in. Eventually, he relents, takes a deep breath and cries out in a shrill voice, the kind that makes Banjou wonder if it’s really Kirishima Ayato he’s talking to.
“We held hands!”
